Fellowship stipend

While participation in the Seminar is free, the United Nations is unable to cover travel or living expenses for all participants. Subject to available funding, a limited number of fellowships will be made offered to assist participants from developing countries with travel and/or living costs.

How to apply for a Fellowship

Applicants can apply for a fellowship by indicating their request on the application form. A justification for the fellowship must be included in the letter of the motivation. Fellowship awards will be decided by the Selection Committee, based on the availability of funds.

Fellowships for Subsistence

If awarded a subsistence fellowship, participants will receive an allowance to cover accommodation, meals, and miscellaneous expenses upon arrival in Geneva. The amount of the subsistence fellowship is set by the organizers of the Seminar and is based on the availability of funds. Participants must provide an official proof and payment of accommodation to the organizers before the allowance can be paid.

Important:

  • If proof and payment of accommodation cannot be provided, the participant will receive only 40% of the stipend for only meals and miscellaneous expenses;
  • The stipend will be paid by cheque in two parts: the first part will be issued at the start of the Seminar, and the second part during the second week of the Seminar. The cheques can only be cashed in Geneva.
  • The organizers are not responsible for securing accommodation for participants. It is the responsibility of the participants to make their own accommodation arrangements.

Please note, the expenses not covered by the fellowship are (and the United Nations does not assume responsibility for) the following:

  • Passport, visa, vaccination and other miscellaneous fees;
  • Expenses incurred in the participant's country of residence in connection with the travel;
  • Salary and allowances from the participant's current employer during the period of the Seminar;
  • Travel and other costs incurred by dependents who might accompany participants;
  • Travel insurance, medical bills and hospitalization, or accident insurance related to attending the Seminar;
  • Compensation in the event of death or disability in connection with attendance of the Seminar.

Fellowships for Travel

For those awarded a travel fellowship, a return air ticket to Geneva will be provided from the participant's country of residence. Travel dates will be arranged for arrival the day before the Seminar and return the day after the Seminar ends.

Important:

  • Only economy class tickets will be issued.
  • No alternative routing or extended stays will be permitted, and any changes to the reservation that incur additional expenses will not be covered by the United Nations.

Full Attendance Requirement

It is important to note that full attendance is mandatory. Participants must attend all scheduled sessions, including lectures, plenary meetings, and working group discussions. Timely arrival is also required for all sessions, as late arrivals may disrupt the flow of discussions and lectures. Failure to attend any part of the Seminar without valid justification, or arriving late consistently, may result in expulsion from the Seminar and forfeiture of any financial or related support provided by the United Nations, including withdrawal of fellowships awarded and recovery of funds provided by the United Nations.
